PIFI Fellow-Dr. Karl Clemens Verfondern Visits Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, CAS

Dr. Karl Clemens Verfondern, from Research Center Jülich in Germany, visited Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) from April to June, 2024. Dr. Verfondern is a recipient of the PIFI Visiting Scientist of the CAS President's International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI). This is his second time to execute this project, the last time is from October to November, 2023.

During the visit, Dr. Verfondern gave a series of seminar titled "Advanced Nuclear Fuel Cycle" and interacted with the students and faculty on site, discussing relevant scientific issues.

Dr. Verfondern researched on the behavior of high-temperature gas cooled reactor fuels and fission products, new energy sources such as hydrogen energy, mainly within the framework of EU and other international cooperation. He was one of the main contributors to the nuclear fuel failure probability analysis program PANAMA for TRISO and the fission product diffusion release analysis program FRESCO II.
